5 States To Avoid When Hauling
posted by Trucker Funds: Monday, February 13, 2012

Truckers use America’s roads more than anyone. Our unique occupation takes us from coast to coast, border to border and state to state. A bad stretch of road can cost you time, money, fuel and your health. Below are the 5 worst states to drive through in continental America – judged by road conditions, fatalities, backups and personal opinion.

5. Oklahoma – Our list of the worst states to drive though begins with Oklahoma. Oklahoma is a multiple offender with poor roads, deficient bridges and a high number of fatalities. Not to mention dull drives through the plains and the chance for tornados make this an all-around tough state to drive through.

Roads To Avoid – The Will Rogers Turnpike (Interstate 44), Route 66, I-84 (Boise City), I-235 (Oklahoma City), Crosstown Express Way (Tulsa).

Tips For Survival – Stay sharp, go slow, ensure bridges are safe before passage, watch for inclement weather, stock up on tunes and audio books, try to avoid large metropolitan areas.

4. New Jersey/New York –We realize these are two states but they are too similar to separate. New Jersey and New York roads are in a state of disrepair caused by decades of heavy traffic. When driving in either of these coastal states you’ll encounter pot holes, decrepit bridges, high traffic volume and ill-mannered drivers. Winter only makes these states more challenging to drive.

Roads To Avoid – New Jersey Turnpike (I-95), I-95 over the George Washington Bridge, Cross Bronx Expressway (NY), I-490 (Rochester, NY).

Tips For Survival – Avoid the George Washington Bridge, avoid NYC (obvious), take extra care in the winter months, prepare for road rage & rude drivers, pack calming music and practice your “wooo-saaaa”.

3. Pennsylvania – Pennsylvania is the 3rd worst state to drive through because its roads and bridges are dangerous, old and rickety. PA is notorious for their narrow mountain roads, constant construction, crowded highways, and “structurally deficient” bridges. Oh yeah, winter makes everything much more slippery and dangerous.

Roads To Avoid – I-79/I-70 Interchange, Pennsylvania Turnkpike, Penn Lincoln Parkway (I-376), US 22 (Allentown, PA), I-83 (Harrisburg, PA).

Tips For Survival – Be especially cautious of bridges, stay very alert, give yourself extra room to stop and make turns, keep your CB on for traffic/route updates, watch for notoriously short on ramps, bring extra coffee, multiply the above times 2 in the winter.

2. California – Runner up goes to the sunny state of California. Although they are quick to adopt new trends and technologies, Cali really neglects its roads. 30% of thoroughfares are in “poor condition”, fuel prices are the highest in the country and traffic is utterly horrid. Cali is home to 7 of the country’s top 24 worst bottle necks and L.A. ranks number 1 in practically every congestion, time spent waiting and driver insanity poll. We’re sure you won’t be able to avoid The Golden State altogether but if you appreciate your time and sanity; avoid L.A.

Roads To Avoid – I-15 to Nevada, State Road 138, San Diego Freeway (I-5), Route 66, US-101, I-405, I-10, I-805, Hollywood Freeway, Riverside Freeway, Ronald Reagan Freeway, Capital City Freeway, I-205 (Stockton CA).

Tips For Survival – Fuel up before you hit CA and feather the throttle while there, avoid LA like the plague, bring sunglasses, bring long audio books, full speeches, and a copy of the 1812 overture.

1. Louisiana – Finally the moment you’ve all been waiting for; the absolute worst state to drive through in the continental United States is…….Louisiana! The state of Louisiana has seen some hard times recently and as a result, their roads and highways have fallen into a state of disrepair. There are pot holes so big you can lay down in them, busy interstates that go from 6 to 4 lanes without a moment’s notice and drunk drivers aplenty. The Fed has responded and rehabilitation of Louisiana’s roads is underway but try and avoid this state all together if you can.

Roads To Avoid – I-55, I-12 (Baton Rouge), I-10 (Baton Rouge)

Tips For Survival – Be very careful – ranked #2 for top deadliest roads, go slow, continuously check your rig for road damage/abuse, be prepared to slow down very quickly on highways, limit night time driving, wear Saints and LSU gear.
